Ed.D. in Bilingual, ESL, Dual Language Education (Online):
The 60-hour Ed.D. in Bilingual, ESL, Dual Language Education (Online) is a 60-hour online interdisciplinary program designed for scholar-practitioners.
The educational objectives of the proposed program are:
(a) to improve the quality of education of emergent bilingual students for the 21st century workforce in Pre-Kindergarten-12 schools and agencies; and,
(b) to lead, develop and evaluate research-based programs, curriculum and instruction for educators of emergent bilingual students.
A combination of coursework, practica and the final Record of Study (ROS) ensure a broad breadth and depth of training. Our program is led by trained and experienced faculty in fields such as:

- Classroom Observation
- Curriculum Development
- Dual Language Education
- ESL Education
- Program Evaluation
- Research Methodology
Course Requirements
The degree program includes the following course requirements:
- Bilingual/ESL/Dual Language education core (30 hours)
- Prescribed Electives: Research (12 hours)
- Internship (6 hours)
- Seminars (6 hours)
- Record of Study (6 hours minimum)
Program Competencies
Graduate students who complete the Ed.D. degree program will be well-positioned to have a meaningful and immediate impact on the field through their service in schools as well as through teaching and leading programs as tenure-track professors, academic professional track or lecturers in universities.
Admissions
- Applications are currently open and will close on May 31st for fall 2025 admissions.
- Applicants must follow all departmental admission requirements.

- Minimum of 2 years of successful teaching experience, preferably in PreK-12 schools.
- Earned masters’ degree in bilingual and ESL education or related areas.
- A professional vita presented in a traditional academic format.
- Three professional references attesting to the applicant’s teaching expertise, interpersonal skills and leadership skills.
- The admissions process requires reviews of documents submitted by applicant, interview with admissions committee and the completion of a writing sample.
- The BESL Division’s Doctoral Admissions Committee uses a standard rubric to assess the applicant’s attributes and qualifications for successfully completing the Ed.D.

- Evidence of two (2) years of successful teaching experience in school settings with emergent bilingual students.
- Evidence of leadership aspirations in working with preservice and in-service teachers in school settings within areas of bilingual education.
- Evidence of leadership qualities.
- Evidence of a career choice appropriate for the degree’s emphasis on teacher leadership in school settings with emergent bilingual students.
- Evidence of writing proficiency (e.g., focus, content, style/organizations, and mechanics/format).
- Evidence of academic potential GPA >3.0

The admission standards include professional and/or academic experience and performance related to the field of bilingual education, ESL and dual language education. These standards assure adequate preparation to enter graduate school in the field of bilingual education/ESL.
