After completing 45-66 hours of pre-requisite coursework, students must apply for upper level admissions. Once admitted into upper level, students begin their field experience blocks:

BEFB Sequence

This block is completed in bilingual or dual-language EC-6 classrooms.

Students complete 110 clock hours and 45 family community based clock hours. Activities include:

  • Observation of instructional delivery
  • Analyzing and reflecting on best practices
  • Application of methods to teach content-areas
  • Development and delivery of lessons for English language learners

Senior Methods

The second field experience block is approximately 110 clock hours.

Students will take courses that include instructional methods in teaching elementary core subject areas:

  • Social Sudies,
  • Mathematics,
  • Science, and
  • Reading/Language Arts.

Practicum activities include observing and teaching in a bilingual or dual language classroom.

Clinical Teaching

The final field experience block is clinical teaching, and is completed during your final semester.

Clinical teaching provides applied experience in public schools that facilitate the development of acceptable and realistic perceptions of roles, responsibilities and relationships. Students work with cooperating teachers who provide guidance for what is expected of a professional teacher and of the school culture.

During clinical teaching, students are enrolled in BEFB 425, which consists of supervision and planned seminars conducted by the supervisor and an online course BEFB 426: Effective Instruction for Hispanic Studies.
