Online Masters in Bilingual Education
The 36-hour Bilingual Education (BIED) Online Master's program provides a sound combination of theory, methodology and substantive application, with some coursework flexibility within areas of program emphasis. Students are prepared to fill teaching and coordinator/director positions focusing on development, coordination and evaluation of bilingual and dual language programs.
The program curriculum provides instruction in curriculum theory, instructional content, teaching methodology, accountability/evaluation strategies and family/community partnering. Students are provided ample opportunities for field-based experiences and are prepared to take the Bilingual Education Supplemental Exam.
The Bilingual Education program is part of the Center for Research & Development in Dual Language Education (CRDLLA).
To be admitted into the BIED Online Master's program, applicants must follow all graduate admission requirements.
During the application process, applicants must apply as a distance education student. Once admitted, students are assigned a temporary faculty advisor. It is recommended students contact their temporary faculty advisor before the beginning of the program.
Five core classes prepare teachers to take the Bilingual Education Supplemental Exam. The remaining courses advance knowledge in and provide opportunities for the following:
- Theory in bilingual education
- Field practicum
- Directed studies
Prescribed courses may be waived or substituted with committee approval, based on student experience and previous training, or demonstration of required skills.
Classes are delivered in a variety of formats including face-to-face, video conferencing and online. A thesis option is also provided.
In addition to success in seminar courses, enrollees must demonstrate skills applied to educational settings for second language learners, including dual language and bilingual programs. These competencies include:
