Project PACT (Promoting Adolescents' Comprehension of Text )

Project Summary: In this this five-year research grant from the Institute of Education Sciences (IES), researchers at Texas A&M are designing and evaluating classroom-based interventions to improve reading comprehension among students in grades 7-12.  This collaborative project involves multiple universities from Texas and Florida. Current studies are examining how to integrate iPad technology in classrooms to teach essential comprehension skills and increase student engagement with complex text.

Challenging Behavior

Project STEP (Supporting Teachers in Evidence Based Practices)

Project Summary: Project STEP (Supporting Teachers in Evidence-based Practices) is a partnership between the Department of Educational Psychology and Head Start of the Brazos Valley Community Action Agency. The overarching goal of this project is to improve outcomes for young children placed at risk for school failure. Project STEP research studies investigate the assessment and treatment of challenging behavior with children who have not been responsive to universal supports.

Training educators to assess and treat challenging behavior

Project Summary: This series of single case research studies aims to identify the most effective and efficient procedures to train educators to implement functional behavioral assessments of challenging behavior with students who have developmental disabilities in public school settings. Educators will be trained in two procedures for experimentally assessing the function of challenging behavior. Data on speed of acquisition, implementation fidelity, and generalization of assessment procedure will be evaluated.

Project Summary: This project develops training videos and downloadable “how-to’s” for evidence based interventions and progress monitoring to be used for students with and at risk of emotional and behavioral disorders. Ideal candidates are creative and willing to be in schools and in video modules.

Investigating Intervention Efficacy Through Meta-analysis

Project Summary: Because co-occurring learning and behavioral challenges are common, adopting evidence-based practices that promote behavioral adjustment and remediate academic deficits is critical. Examining the efficacy of interventions through meta-analysis allows for the aggregation of data across studies to provide more accurate conclusions that inform practice. Meta-analysis allows us to examine what variables moderate intervention effectiveness, and for which students they are most effective. Studies investigated primarily involve single-case research.

Project Summary: This project involves Universal Screening for Social, Emotional, and Behavioral Disorders, Intervention Implementation & Progress Monitoring. Research questions involve the selection and implementation of interventions in school settings.

The Autism Clinic at Brazos Valley Rehabilitation Center

Project Summary: The Autism Clinic is a partnership between the Center on Disability and Development and the Brazos Valley Rehab Center. The clinic serves community families with research-based autism treatments, provides opportunities for students to learn clinical skills, and is a facility for cutting-edge research on autism assessment and interventions. Project START (Supporting the Treatment of Autism in Rural areas using Technology)

Project Summary: The purpose of this project is to develop and evaluate ways of delivering high quality services to rural families affected by autism. Project START consists of a series of single case research design studies examining the effectiveness, feasibility, and suitability of mobile technology, such as iPads and videoconferencing software, to increase accessibility of behavioral training and intervention for rural families via tele-health practices.

Project RICOTA (Research for Improving Communication Outcomes via Technology for people with Autism spectrum disorders)

Project Summary: Project RICOTA involves a series of single-case studies, meta-analyses, and grant proposals aimed at improving communication outcomes for people with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). In particular, cutting-edge technologies are investigated, including mobile technologies and augmentative and alternative communication systems. Studies include participants of all ages and abilities and include measures of communication, social, behavior, and academic skills.

Academic Intervention

Project OASIs  Online Academic Strategies & Intervention's

Project Summary: This project examines the efficacy of academic strategies and interventions (for students with behavior problems in the classroom) through meta-analysis of single case research and the calculation of non-parametric effect sizes.  Essential procedures and moderators are identified to increase accessibility, adoption, fidelity, and treatment effects.  The project consists of meta-analysis, video training, materials development, and repository building activities. Ideal candidates are willing to conduct both library and field research.

Single Case Research Design Innovations

SCR (Single Case Research) Team

Project Summary: This project works on one or more research papers per semester related to the development and dissemination of single case research methods including issues involved in deployment in school and community settings for data based decision making.  Web page and smart phone application development is ongoing.  This is a multi-state project with collaborators at Tulane, Florida, & Missouri This project is non-field based, requires completion of  EPSY 630: Single Case Research or equivalent, and interest in methodology and/or programming.
