Tong Receives Dissertation Award From Educational Psychology8/21/07 By Jenna Kujawski Fuhui Tong, a new assistant professor of special and bilingual education, was awarded the 2006-2007 Dissertation of the Year Award from the educational psychology department. "I feel honored to be the recipient of this prestigious award," Tong said. "However, it would never have happened without the support, encouragement and advice from my committee, my colleagues in the bilingual program and the whole department." Tong's dissertation was titled "Oral English Development and Impact on Emergent Reading Achievement: A Comparative Study of Transitional Bilingual and Structured English Immersion Models." The study was part of a federal project titled "English Language and Literacy Acquisition." Through the research, Tong discovered that students receiving intervention strategies demonstrated a steeper growth in their oral English acquisition than students who didn't receive intervention. Tong's faculty appointment with the department begins this fall. "My service goal is to provide assistance to the department, college and the university to promote diversity and cross-cultural understanding," Tong said. |
