The Department of Educational Psychology at Texas A&M University is committed to preparing qualified individuals as educational and career counselors. We believe that well-trained counselors play an integral part in the academic and personal development of students at all levels of the educational process. This Master's level School Counselor Program is a non-thesis M.Ed. option requiring a minimum of 36 hours of graduate coursework. This program is not designed to prepare graduates as LPCs (Licensed Professional Counselors).
Completion of the required coursework, passing the School Counselor Exam (TExES #152), and two years of teaching experience are required for certification by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) as a school counselor. It is permissible to begin this program before completing the teaching requirement.
Required coursework includes a general core curriculum including human growth and development, social and cultural foundations, relationships, group work, career development, evaluation, research, professional orientation, clinical instruction and counseling. Practicum experiences are also included. A wide variety of electives are available.
To accommodate the work schedules of the majority of the students in this program, many of the required courses are offered in the evenings and during the summer. However, there are classes that are not under the scheduling control of the School Counseling faculty. Two counseling practice courses will necessitate daytime hours.
To complete the Masters degree a final examination is required by the Graduate School. Our faculty recommends using the School Counselor Exam (TExES #152) as the written test requirement. This option must be authorized by the advisory committee.
