Non Categorical Special Education

The Non-Categorical (Pre-K to 12th grade) Special Education Program is offered at the graduate level for students wishing to further their education in special education or receive additional certification in special education.  This program prepares teachers to instruct students with mild to moderate learning disabilities, mental retardation, and emotional disturbance.  Through varied field work, graduates work with students in an array of special and general education settings.

Why Choose Special Education?

You will be part of a demanding yet very rewarding field.  Currently, the demand for qualified professionals to work with students with unique and challenging needs exceeds the available supply.

  • The numbers of students served by special education is increasing faster than ever
  • The Seventeenth Annual Report to Congress reported a dramatic shortage of approximately 28,000 special education teachers.
  • Nationally, for every 12 special education teachers employed, there is a need for 1 additional teacher.
  • In the next 10 years, the number of special education teachers will need to increase by 59% to meet the demands.
