Journal Article Explains About Innovative Program For Med Students

7/19/07

By Lauren Rouse

Angela Heads and Alisa Van Landingham published an article in the Innovations in Family Medicine Education Journal on a study done in collaboration with the Texas A&M University College of Medicine. The paper describes preceptorship programs in the Department of Family and Community Medicine.

The program gives medical students the opportunity to work with physicians, allowing them to get hands on training they don't get in the classroom. In the study, a needs assessment was conducted to determine what types of faculty development resources the preceptors would like to have available to them in order to provide the best possible training to their medical students.  Based on that needs assessment, several programs were implemented and the paper details which were most popular and useful for the preceptors.

"This type of research is not what I imagined that psychologists typically do.  This experience along with other research experiences in the Department of Family Medicine has made me more aware of the many different types of settings where a psychologist's input would be valuable," Heads said.
