Field Experiences

The School Psychology program at Texas A&M has a strong commitment to integrating field-based experiences with didactic training. Beginning in the first year, students are assigned to various public schools to complete course assignments in the field. This practice is continued in the second year both through coursework and the therapy practicum. Public schools generally serve as the setting for the third year practicum. Students also have the opportunity to work in the Counseling and Assessment Clinic operated on campus by the Department of Educational Psychology or at the Community Health Center in near-by Bryan.

In addition to these field experiences, many students gain extended experience in other settings and contexts, either through contracts or by election to take additional practicum hours; sites generally can be identified to meet the interests and needs of individual students. Sites that are currently being used or have been used in the past include:

  • Head Start (Brazos Valley)
  • Special Opportunity School (805), Bryan ISD
  • Scott & White Clinic (Temple)
  • Dallas Children's Hospital
  • Texas Children's Hospital (Houston)
  • Students At Risk (STAR)
  • Juvenile Justice Center
  • Texas A&M Student Counseling Center
  • Renaissance Hospital

The range of contexts and experiences available to students contributes to the excellent record of Texas A&M University students in obtaining highly competitive APA accredited internships.
