Educational Psychology Foundations
Educational Psychology Foundations is based on the belief that application of psychological theory and research methods can inform and improve the educational process. Looking to the future, it is clear that an understanding of teaching, learning, assessment, and development processes will become increasingly important for educational researchers and leaders in meeting challenges that lie ahead. As science and technology progress, the amount of information students must acquire and the sophistication of cognitive skills that students must master increases apace. As the cultural and linguistic diversity of students increases, the challenge of facilitating the growth and development of each student expands. As the world economy becomes more competitive, the need to unlock the creative potential of each individual intensifies Educational Psychology Foundations affords each student the opportunity to develop a program of study tailored to one's professional needs and interests. EPF provides an atmosphere in which graduate students participate in a community of scholars and are immersed in the ongoing process of generating and applying new knowledge regarding the educational enterprise. In this program, active participation in a dynamic community of research and scholarship is intended to ensure that graduate students acquire the knowledge and skills needed to assume leadership roles in education and research. Specializations in this program include Educational Technology (Ph. D. only); Intelligence, Creativity, and Giftedness; Learning, Development, and Instruction; and Research, Measurement, and Statistics. Degrees in each are available at both the doctoral and master's level. In addition to required core classes for each specialization, opportunities for additional work in the other specializations are also available. Offering a variety of learning experiences, the program is interdisciplinary, drawing on expertise in psychology and in other departments within the College of Education and Human Development, and the university. Such areas include linguistics, sociology, computer science, statistics, and psychology.
