School Counseling Curriculum

The Masters level School Counseling Program is a non-thesis M.Ed. option requiring a minimum of 36 hours of graduate coursework. Students who complete the course requirements, hold a valid teaching certificate, and pass the TEA School Counselor Exam (TExES #152) will be eligible to apply for certification as a school counselor with the Texas Education Agency (TEA) upon completion of two years of teaching. This program is not intended to prepare graduates for independent private practice as a Licensed Professional Counselor.

        SPSY 628 Consultation: Theory and Techniques   or    SPSY 638 Systems Consultation

Group Work (3 credit hours)
        CPSY 633 Introduction to Group Processes

Career Development

Appraisal (3 credit hours)
       EPSY 622 Measurement and Evaluation in Education

Research (3 credit hours)
       EPSY 636 Techniques of Research

Professional Orientation

Notes:

* In order to take CPSY 639 the student must have an A or B grade in CPSY 630, 631, and 633 AND permission of instructor.

** In order to take CPSY 683 the student must have an A or B grade in CPSY 639, 679 (or SPSY 629), & 632 AND receive written permission from the training director.

 

A student may not graduate from the program with a grade less than B on their course of study.

In addition to the courses, the student must form a three person graduate faculty committee with a counseling faculty member as the advisor or chair. The advisory committee will conduct the final written examination and oral examination as required by the Office of Graduate Studies.
