SP AdmissionsOffice of Admissions and Records
Admission is based on demonstrated quality in both academic ability and in interpersonal skills. Criteria include the following factors:
Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores and transcripts of previous degrees are required. GRE advanced psychology scores are required once admitted; it is recommended applicants ta take this when taking the GRE.
Recommendations (a minimum of 3) that testify to the intellectual and personal qualities of the applicant support the applicant's choice of school psychology as an appropriate professional and personal career area are required. These recommendations should be written on the forms available with the Department of Educational Psychology's application. Recommenders should be professors and employers who are able to evaluate the applicant objectively and accurately.
The autobiographic profile focusing on the applicant's education and professional goals is an important and revealing part of the review process. The profile is described on the white applicant biographical form available from the department. A second essay focusing on research interests are also required.
Consideration is given to a master's degree in a related discipline, with special consideration given to those having post-degree professional work experience and experience with diverse populations.
The usual size of the applicant pool is about 50 per year. Approximately 10 to 12 applicants are offered a position in the incoming class. A day-long orientation for those selected is held in early spring. Those to whom an offer of a position is made must reply by April 15.

A SPECIAL NOTE TO APPLICANTS
Each year a few applicants to our Ph.D. program get "lost in the cracks": that is, their applications fail to receive adequate attention. While this condition is not unusual when one considers the large volume of materials we receive, we recognize it as a loss to our program and a serious disappointment of the individuals involved. The following information and suggestions are intended to prevent your application materials from going astray.
Our program can consider only those applicants whose completed applications have been received by the Office of Graduate Admissions and have been forwarded to the Department of Educational Psychology by May. To be complete, this includes Texas Common Application form (available on-line); the $50 application fee; two complete, official transcripts from each college or university previously attended; and official GRE scores. Since you have little control over when your scores and transcripts will be mailed, we suggest that you make these arrangements before the beginning of November. Additionally, you must submit the Department of Educational Psychology's Applicant Biographical Data Form, an Autobiographical Profile as requested on the data form, and three letters of recommendation. Please use the departmental forms for these recommendations. All application materials are due December 1.
In January, the School Psychology faculty reviews the completed applications. Reference and all other materials must be available for an applicant to be considered and possibly invited for an interview. Again, it is imperative that you arrange to have all forms reach us before the December 15 deadline.
These points should be of help:
- On all forms and in all correspondence, clearly identify yourself as an applicant to the School Psychology program in the Department of Educational Psychology.
- Take the initiative and call the Academic Advisor in our department to determine if all materials have reached us. This check should be made by November 1.
- If you wish, include a self-addressed postcard with the materials you send to our department. We will mail the card once all your application materials are received.
- Remind the individuals who will submit your references to mail the references early and check with them to see if they have done so.
- If you are currently enrolled in any department at Texas A&M University, be sure to bring this fact to our attention.
- When you send your application for admission to Graduate Admissions, indicate on it the deadline of December 1. Your application can then be processed more quickly.
Please arrange to have materials mailed to the correct office:
- GRE scores go to Texas A&M University (code 6003)
- Transcripts, application fee and application form are sent to the Office of Graduate Admissions
- Recommendations and biographical data form including autobiographical profile and statement on research interest are sent directly to the Academic Advisor, Department of Educational Psychology
- If you have any questions or need replacement forms, please contact Kristie Stramaski, Academic Advisor, at (979) 845-1833 or email her at kstramaski@tamu.edu
